In our climate, we really can\u2019t risk doing damage to our air conditioners. We need them in good working order at all times! That means it\u2019s essential to prioritize AC maintenance and, whenever something does go wrong, to get repairs right away before it gets any worse. But is there anything else you should be doing to keep your air conditioner happy and healthy? Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your air conditioner has an air filter that needs regular attention, so it doesn\u2019t end up clogged with a thick mat of dust. When should you be changing your AC air filter, and how do you get it done right? We\u2019ll tell you everything you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Dangers of Dust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A clogged air conditioner air filter doesn\u2019t just mean you\u2019ll end up breathing more dust. There are consequences that are far more unpleasant! Here are some of the things that can occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clogged air filter can prevent airflow from moving through the system. Heat in the motor won\u2019t dissipate. When the system registers the internal heat, it will shut down to prevent more serious overheating. It\u2019ll start up again moments later\u2026 over and over. This is called short cycling, and it creates a lot of wear and tear and uses a lot more energy than standard AC operation, driving your bills up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the system doesn\u2019t manage to shut down in time, and heat continues to build in the air conditioner, it can cause wires to short out. It can cause components inside the motor to literally fuse together! You might need to purchase a brand-new motor, rather than being able to have the motor repaired. And all for the lack of a few minutes\u2019 work to change the filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Change an AC Air Filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are two main types of air filter in HVAC systems. Disposable ones are meant to be thrown away. You will need to have replacements on hand. Simply swap out the dirty filter for a brand-new one. Reusable ones are meant to be washed. You can vacuum them with a gentle brush attachment or, if necessary, wash them with water. Make sure they\u2019re dry before reinserting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ductless systems have air filters, too! There\u2019s one in each ductless air handler. It\u2019s almost certainly reusable, so just wash it, allow it to dry, and replace it. Don\u2019t forget to do this for all the air handlers in your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to Change an AC Air Filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The usual recommendation is that AC air filters need to be changed monthly. But there are some other considerations that may make you want to keep a different schedule. If you have pets who shed or other sources of dust, such as nearby construction, you should check the filter more frequently. And during times when you\u2019re only using the AC sporadically, you can check the filter every 2-3 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
