What an Improperly Sized AC Means for Your House

Bigger is often viewed as better, but when it comes to your air conditioner, it’s not so simple. In fact, a bigger AC can actually cost you money and cause you problems, as funny as that sounds.

If your air conditioner is too small, it can lead to more frequent AC repair in Longwood, FL than you should actually need in the first place. The point is this: it’s important to get the right size AC for your home. This is why.

Small Air Conditioners Can’t Keep Up

Air conditioners are rated using BTUs, or British Thermal Units. The more BTUs, the more power it has to cool your home, in a nutshell.

If your home is a certain amount of square footage, then it requires a minimum of X amount of BTUs, otherwise it struggles.

With an air conditioner that’s too small, it can’t sufficiently cool your space. It struggles and then you end up with a half-cooled home that just doesn’t cut it. You don’t want an underpowered AC in your home.

Poor Efficiency

If your AC is too small, it’s simply not going to be efficient. Let’s say that it still hits your target temperature though, isn’t that good enough?

We wish it were, but that AC needs to chug along and pull more power and stay on for longer just to hit that target. When it takes too long, you burn more energy.

Beyond poor efficiency, you also damage your unit faster. Wear and tear sets in even on the most powerful air conditioners with the least amount of runtime. It just happens.

But when you accelerate the speed at which your AC declines, it means you’ll have more full AC replacements throughout your life. That can add up to five figures fast.

Unnecessary Upfront Cost

Now let’s flip the script. If your air conditioner is too big and powerful for your home, then what do you really need it for? What is it doing for you? It may cool your home faster, but it involves an unnecessary upfront cost.

It still deteriorates over time either way, so why pay more for an expensive unit now that you’ll still have to replace? Here’s one more point about buying too-big AC units for your home.

Expensive Ongoing Cost

That bigger AC is also using more power. It’s not just outputting extra BTUs for the fun of it–it requires more energy to run, so you’re spending more in energy bills throughout the entire unit’s lifespan as well.

Getting an air conditioner size for your home is important to optimize cost and output so you can get the comfort you want, but not at a price that drains your wallet and leaves you upset in the end.

Size Matters (in Some Cases)

Your air conditioner size matters more than you might think. Don’t get stuck with unnecessary repairs and problems because it’s too small (or too big). Make sure you get your air conditioner sized with a pre-installation appointment prior to the installation date so you know exactly what you’re getting into.
