Lifestyle Changes for Your AC

The air conditioner in your home does a lot for you! It makes the summer heat bearable and it can help to keep your family healthy. A few simple lifestyle changes can go a long way in improving the efficiency and lifespan of your air conditioner.

Here are some best practices:

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

One of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your air conditioning unit’s efficiency is to change the air filter regularly. A dirty air filter will restrict airflow, causing the AC unit to work harder than necessary.

This can lead to decreased efficiency and shortened lifespan for your AC. Be sure to check your air filter every month and replace it when it’s dirty.

Keep Sunlight Out

If your AC unit is in direct sunlight, it can become up to 20° hotter! It will not only make the air coming out of the vents much warmer but this heat buildup can decrease performance and shorten lifespan.

Be mindful of where you set up your thermostat, or where your vents are. If possible, place a tall plant or shade tree in front of the window to soak up all that sunlight!

Run Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans can be used to help circulate air. This will help to offset some of the work that your AC unit has to do and can save on energy costs.

In the summertime, ceiling fans can be used in conjunction with your AC unit to help cool the room. Run the fan blades in a clockwise direction to create a wind-chill effect. This will help you feel cooler and will use less energy than running the AC unit alone.

Keep the Unit Clean and Clear

Just like your car, your AC unit needs regular maintenance to keep it running at its best. Make sure to clean the unit’s exterior regularly and clear away any debris or obstructions that might be blocking airflow.

Use the Right Size Air Conditioner for Your Space

Every home is different, so one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to AC units. The right air conditioner will have enough capacity to keep up with your home’s cooling needs while not working harder than necessary.

Larger homes will need an outdoor central air system to provide adequate cooling and heating capacity for your family’s needs.

A trained technician can help you determine the right size AC unit for your home. You may ask the technician to fix your AC if you need air conditioning repair in Oviedo, FL.

Avoid Extended Periods of High Usage

When possible, keep usage low. Turn up the AC’s thermostat by a few degrees when you leave for work in the morning or go to sleep at night, and set it just low enough to maintain comfort throughout your home during peak usage times.

Fix Your AC When You Notice Something Wrong

If you notice that your AC unit is not cooling the room as it should, or if it’s making strange noises, have it serviced right away. A small problem can quickly turn into a big one if left unchecked.

Regular maintenance will help to keep your AC running at peak performance and can extend its lifespan.
